Freestanding Tub Fillers: Floor-Mount vs Wall-Mount
A freestanding tub has no deck for a faucet, so the filler is its own decision. It comes down to where the water comes from: the floor or the wall.
Floor-mounted fillers
A floor-mounted filler stands on its own beside the tub, with supply lines coming up through the floor. It's the classic partner for a freestanding tub and lets you place the tub anywhere in the room, including the middle.
- Works with any tub position.
- Needs supply lines run under the floor, which is easiest during a remodel.
- Often includes a hand shower for rinsing hair and cleaning the tub.
Wall-mounted fillers
A wall-mounted filler comes out of the wall behind the tub. It keeps the floor clear and suits tubs set against a wall.
- The spout must reach past the tub's rim into the water area, so check the spout reach against the gap between wall and tub.
- The valve sits in the wall, so plan it while the wall is open.
Matching finishes
Match the filler to the rest of the bathroom's fixtures (chrome, brushed nickel, matte black or brass) and to the tub's drain, which is usually visible.
Before you buy
- Measure the tub's rim height: floor-mounted spouts need to clear it comfortably.
- Decide where the valve and supply lines will go and confirm with your plumber.
- Think about a hand shower if you'll use the tub for bathing kids or pets.
