Bathroom Remodel Checklist: Plan It in the Right Order
Most remodel headaches come from doing things in the wrong order. Work through this list and the big decisions will line up.
1. Decide what's changing
- Are you keeping the layout, or moving the tub, toilet or vanity? Moving plumbing adds cost and time.
- Who uses the bathroom, and what bothers them about it today?
2. Measure everything
- Room length, width and ceiling height; window and door positions and swings.
- Where the drains and supply lines are now.
3. Set a budget with a cushion
Price the fixtures and the labour separately, and keep a contingency for surprises behind the walls, which are common in older homes.
4. Choose the big pieces first
- Tub or shower: it drives the layout. See our tub size guide.
- Vanity: width, sinks and storage. See our vanity size guide.
- Surfaces: vanity top, tile and flooring.
5. Then the finishes
Faucets, tub filler, lighting, mirrors and hardware. Pick one metal finish and carry it through the room.
6. Check lead times and delivery
Large items like tubs and vanities can take time to arrive and need a clear path into the house. Have them on site before demolition starts so the project doesn't stall.
7. Hire the right people
Plumbing, electrical (for lighting, fans and jetted tubs) and any structural work should be done by licensed pros, with permits where your town requires them.
